Slow Saturdays: Double Your Time

Slow Saturdays is a weekly challenge related to slow parenting. The challenges are intended to break down a large project into smaller, more manageable pieces. Try it for yourself. You are, as always, encouraged to post comments. Tell us your story.

There are many people (including the Slow guru, himself, Carl Honore) who suggest that slowing down can be accomplished by taking a task that we need to do, estimating the time that it will take and then doubling that time in our schedule. For example, if you normally need ten minutes to eat breakfast, give yourself twenty.

The Challenge: This week, pick a task and double the time it takes to do it in your schedule. For example, if it usually takes 20 minutes to get to work, try giving yourself 40 minutes. How does it feel?

I often get frustrated walking the four blocks to playschool. Something that should only take five minutes can take ages as the Bear stop to greet dogs, pick up a stick, stomp in puddles, watch the garbage truck, etc. I set aside about ten minutes to get to playschool but that time is accompanied by my pleas to ‘please keep moving!’ For the kids, time isn’t important; it’s the experience of being outside. For adults, however, a walk usually has purpose. We move from A to B.

This week, I’m going to attempt to double the time it takes to get to playschool. This will allow the Bear 20 minutes for the four-block walk and plenty of time to dawdle.
