Slow Saturdays – Counting Screen Time

Slow Saturdays is a weekly challenge related to slow parenting. The challenges are intended to break down a large project into smaller, more manageable pieces. Try it for yourself. You are, as always, encouraged to post comments. Tell us your story.

Okay, it’s time to chat about screen time. How much time do we spend in front of a screen? The answer for me is, ‘I’m not sure.’ We don’t have cable, but the Bear is allowed to watch DVDs. And while MJ and I don’t spend a lot of time in front of the TV (we connect the laptop to the television), we couldn’t live without our computers.

The Challenge – Count the number of hours you and/or the kids are in front of a screen. Rather than post a challenge about eliminating screen-time, I thought that we should start with being aware of how much time we are in front of one! For each day, estimate the number of hours (adult and/or children hours) that are spent in front of a television, portable DVD player, video game, computer, etc. Even watching movies or playing games on a phone counts.

As for last week’s challenge…
